my 2 cents on this:
- I'd like to add to this already great collection of advice:
There are situations where giving a complete estimation of the time required is not possible..
Then give the date for freezing the estimate.
Generally experienced devs have a gut feel about a task, they can quote that estimate as the first approximate estimate and use that to ask for time to build the work breakdown and come up with a better estimate.
And you can help your stakeholders understand that first estimate has higher error margins and the detailed one will have lower error margins.
Also, developers tend to skip the due diligence on the work breakdown, impress upon them that they are completely in charge and they will be flagged and will have to work overtime if they miss out on the timeline of their second estimate. So they should make complete use of the estimation time allotted.

These are the minimum check list
1) Term Life insurance. Take the frills basic plan.
Insured amount there are formulae
2) Health Insurance
3) 6 months of monthly expenses or 3 months of salary in liquid form like Savings Bank account. If amount is high then liquid funds
4) Tax planning investments:
ELSS, PPF, NPS, etc.

The instruments that you use for 5a and 5b may vary.
I have seen some interesting products in this category especially around income generating fixed assets, where you can have part ownership of the fix asset manged by the company.
Most interesting fixed asset types I have seen so far - hotels / serviced apartments in Goa, Pondicherry, ..
and tractors and farm equipment, sustainable energy (own a wind turbine in davangere)
managed fruit farms, timber forests are also common
